Observing a stilt tossing debris toward nest

I watched this Black-necked Stilt picking up debris and tossing it in the general direction of its nest. Shown below is the female, but its mate was doing the same thing but less vigorously. this behavior is mentioned in Philip Unitt's San Diego Bird Atlas, but he doesn't give a reason for it.
